Workplace Issues

Workplace difficulties

Work and career are important parts of our lives, underpinning financial security, as well as providing opportunities to achieve goals and enhance our self-esteem.  Sometimes though work and career can have a more negative effect on our wellbeing.  Some issues that often arise include:

  • Bullying and harassment
  • Workplace conflicts including “personality clashes”
  • Poor job design and inappropriate workloads
  • Difficulties with time management
  • Lack of confidence or assertive communication skills in dealings with colleagues and managers
  • Poor people management skills
  • Difficulties with work-life balance
  • Impact on individuals of workplace injuries
  • Unclear career progression pathways

Workplace bullying is a significant issue in Australian workplaces.  The impact upon individuals who are bullied is severe and has longlasting effects on self esteem and  very often leads to severe  anxiety and depression.  It often leads to secondary issues such as substance abuse as individuals attempt to "self medicate" their pain.

Often individuals remain in bullying situations because of their financial reliance on their workplace, but also because they tend to think that what is happening to them is somehow their own fault.  It is this latter reasoning that does the most psychological damage.

Having had long years of experience in large and small organisations, we can help you to see more clearly what is happening, what is salvageable, and what actions need to be taken.  The recovery period is lengthy (in our experience over a year), even after individuals are able to remove themselves from the situation.  This is because rebuilding shattered self esteem and confidence in one's ability, and allowing oneself to trust in others again, takes time.

Other workplace issues that may be creating great distress and frustration such as job design and skill deficits are something we understand.  We will help you to become more empowered in the workplace, through understanding the employers’ perspective and being assertive so there is a win-win outcome, and skills in communication and time management.  We will also support you to manage the impact of workplace issues on your wellbeing such as difficulties sleeping, bringing work worries home, or other psychological issues including Anxiety and Depression.

Career direction

If you are wondering where your career is going or considering a big change in career, we can help you to be more certain that the new direction is the right one.  We use evidence based psychometric tests (that are only available to psychologists) to provide aptitude testing that maps career fields to your unique personality style.

The psychological research and evidence on the five core factors of Personality is extensive, and we use an assessment tool that addresses these five factors, and also breaks the content down into 16 sub-factors that provide useable career management indicators.  We have the skills to help you interpret what this means for you, so you can make your plans for the career that you want, and importantly are very likely to enjoy!
